Frank Miller is a photographer who lives and works in Salem, Oregon. His
"Specimens” series invites us to think about the history and philosophy of science
and the thin line between attraction and revulsion. These photographs of old and
awkwardly preserved zoological specimens point out how much our relationship
with nature has changed over time. Miller is interested in the specimens as artifacts
that capture the history of how we understand our relationship with wild animals,
and by extension our own place in the natural world. He utilizes his background in
photojournalism and the technical skill gained from a career in commercial
photography to make images that are eerie and thought provoking, but also
beautifully executed. Miller’s skill as a photographer draws the viewer in and
encourages them to engage with his somewhat uncomfortable subject matter.
